Cagayan de Oro: Whitewater River Rafting Adventure

The BACKPACKERS Mindanao trip: Day One

Whitewater River Rafting Adventure:
Taking IT to the Extreme!
By Heinz Lopez Alvarez, Jr.

Raft 1: York, Frank, Jovy, Bogs, DP, and Contz
Raft 2: Angel, Liz, Ivan, Marion, Ralph, and Heinz

River rafting is considered as an extreme sports as it can be dangerous. A favorite in Australia and Europe, this activity had easily earned Filipino's interest. Perhaps, the most famous river for a whitewater adventure in the country is found in Cagayan de Oro.

The modern raft is an inflatable boat, made up of rubberized fabrics with several air chambers. Rafts are usually propelled with ordinary paddles and usually hold at least four to twelve persons.

It was one of our major activities in Mindanao and we were all guilty of the extreme excitement felt for this extreme sports. Some of us had tried beach kayaking in the past but  everybody gave this river rafting a higher level of  anticipation as it was everybody's first river rafting together with the rest of The BACKPACKERS. Also, this trip was the Group's first outside Luzon. Really, excitement was beyond the ceiling. And, take note, we did it first thing and almost right after landing in Cagayan de Oro!

The BACKPACKERS: Geared up and Ready

We employed Bugsay ( for this great activity and we took the Advance II Course, which was an 18-kilometer river rafting adventure giving us 26 class 3+ rapids while witnessing the scenic views along the river. The company was great. Personally, I would recommend that team for those who are planning to explore Cagayan de Oro river- "the most exciting river in the country," as they say. The team provided us with the necessary briefing before sending us off to the river with current noone would dare to test without the right life-saving gears!

The Briefing.
The Prayer.
Everybody was too excited but at the same time felt a pinch of fear inside. But as a Group, it's our prayers that always keep is safe.

And the course started...

Jovy's scream says it all!

We had a total fun fighting the forces from class 3+ rapids...
...and enjoyed the view along the river too!

This extreme activity washed away the stress we got from the city!

'Not sure though, when Marion tried Kayaking and lost control with her direction... Hahaha!

BP Girls baptizing Mother Nature...

Included in the Bugsay Package was our lunch meal. That was one of the sumptuous meal we had in our entire lives; atleast, as far as our mountaineering activity is concerned.  The Bugsay  Guides were very resourceful that they took the raft from the river, brought it in the riverside, turned it up-side-down, and eureka! A fine dining table!

After lunch, we went back to the river to complete our five-hour wrestling with the Cagayan de Oro river.

Ang galing ng group nyo mga sirs and mams. Mga magkano ba nagastos nyo dito? Kahit estimated lang po.

Hi Steph!

Thank you for visiting our site!

I checked again our SEPTEMBER NORTHERN MINDANAO ADVENTURE itinerary, where we visited Cagayan de Oro, Camiguin and Bukidnon.

The final estimated budget (excluding airfare): 6,581Php

I emailed our September itinerary in the email address that you provided here.

Note that there are expenses that are good for the group. Hence, if your group is smaller (we were 12), the group expense will become higher, and vice versa.

The expenses wil be smaller also if you will not include CAMIGUIN in your destination. But you can replace the day in Camiguin in the itinerary with another Adventure that you can book in Cagayan de Oro (ex. Macahambus Park, etc.)

Hope this helps! =D
