Mt. Pico de Loro:
The BACKPACKERS Anniversary
and First Friendship Climb

November 18 and 19 - As the first part of The BACKPACKERS' celebration of its First Year Anniversary, the Group climbed Mt. Pico de Loro in Ternate, Cavite; and it was a fruitful Friendship Climb participated by 24 climbers.

The Group assembled at McDonalds along the Service Road (near Baclaran Church) in Pasay City between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM. When completed, a hired minibus transported the Group to its destination - jump-off point to the Parrot's Beak.

Because it was a friendship climb, participants were strategically divided into three teams (where guests were equally distributed) so there were lead, mid and end packs.

The Lead Pack led by the BP Lead himself, Ivan.
The Mid Pack led by BP Pioneer, York.
The End Pack led by BP Pioneer, Heinz.

The Climb

The trek started at around 11:45 AM in moderate pacing as there were first-timers. For BP Pioneers, seeing them doing their best to to keep up with the rest of the Group gave a kind of satisfaction as it was an indicator that they have appreciated a sense of climbing - determination.

Percy, a first-time climber
Annalyn, a first-time climber
The Campsite 1 by the bahay kubo marked a major stop for the Group. There they took their lunch meals, which they bought from a fast food restaurant along their way from Manila, while the other girls took the initiative to cook in advance for dinner.

Having said that it was a friendship climb, everybody took the opportunity to mingle with other climbers. Some even had the chance to play and had children fun!

The trek resumed. The lead pack advanced a bit so that the campsite would be planned properly before the rest of the group reached it. Considering the speed of the first-time climbers, the mid and back pack took it moderately. It took approximately four hours before the whole pack reached the campsite.

It was already late in the afternoon, but everybody admired the beauty of Mt. Pico de Loro. Cameras flashed. Everybody got busy having their pictures taken on top of this famous mountain.

Before the surroundings were totally swallowed by the darkness of the night, tents were already fixed and dinner was ready.

The Socials

Socials is an important part in a friendship climb. It is a chance to know more about those new faces and new comers in the group.

The Group enjoyed chatting and getting-to-know-each-other session over bottles of tiquila. Had some mind games too!

The SUMMIT and TORENG BATO Challenge

For timers, it was agreed that it would seem you miss the "real adventure" if you would not climb the Toreng Bato; though, reaching The Parrot's Beak summit is already something to be proud of. And for this Group, the pioneers were happy because most of its guests did try to conquer the ultimate challenge of climbing the monolith!

To have a general "feel" if an average and first-time climbers can do it, Mon and Heinz tested the rock.

It was November of 2010 when I invited five friends to meet Mt. Pico de Loro. A month after that, The BACKPACKERS was born.
September of 2012, The BACKPACKERS conquered Mt. Pico de Loro through its traverse trails and found an unexpected company.
